Small Town Boom Town

Combining a small-town feeling with big opportunities

While Fort McMurray seems to be somewhat unassuming, don’t be fooled. This small area in Northern Alberta is home to the third-largest oil reserve in the world and boasts average household incomes at twice the Canadian national average. Known as Canada’s economic engine, the Fort McMurray area is the source of 75% of Canada’s oil resources. It’s also an entrepreneurial hub offering an abundance of opportunity for big and small businesses. While rich in natural resources, this area is also home to one of the world’s seven natural wonders – the northern lights. They can be seen in this region that is also home of the largest dark sky preserve and Canada’s largest national park. A UNSECO world heritage site, and home to the world’s largest herd of free-roaming wood bison.

While industry and business are the main draw to the Fort McMurray region, it all centres around family life and community spirit. From playgrounds, schools, and nature trails galore, Fort McMurray is also home to North America’s largest recreation centre. Education, arts and culture, technology, and athletic programs are all supported by the innovative and forward-thinking culture. Using centuries of Indigenous knowledge and combining that with technology and bright ideas, Fort McMurray has developed hundreds of initiatives used world-wide.

The region has a strong and rich Indigenous community that has been actively involved in the flourishing economy and cultural spirit for thousands of years. The region is a proudly diverse society representing over 60 countries. The different languages, customs, traditions and backgrounds add so much colour and flavour to Wood Buffalo’s charm.

If you’ve never been to the Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo area, now you have many reasons to visit, or to build your family and career. Welcome to our little piece of Heaven!
